When l first started riding a snowboard l got a fairly cheap board though new with step in bindings. l got Switch binds because they are stronger than the K2 or Burton bindings.Flow is also a great choice for a beginner. Why use a step in binding to learn? It is a lot easier for you to unhook when your sweaty and a little frustrated with the crash and burn.Get a good pair of wrist guards also you will thank me later.

To be honest, l would not be thinking about buying a board until you've gone an few times & r sure that you're going to stick with it. These days a decent but not even all that great set-up can cost u $300-$400 easy. Plus the equipment that they rent at most mountains is fine if you're just learning. If u really want ur own stuff a seasonal rental might be a good option.

If there is one in ur area, l would recommend finding a mountain that has a Burton Method Center. They tend to use special boards that have beveled edges which r easier to learn on & help prevent the most painful types of falls. On the East Coast u can find these at Loon Mt. in NH & Hunter Mtn, NY.
