They do use different boots, but in both cases there is a range of quality. The majority of snowboarders use strap bindings. This is where u will find the most variety. There r some bindings that offer the style of a strap with the convenience of a snap up heel (Flow & K2). However beware that these have their own issues as well. If u r just getting started l highly recommend a traditional strap binding. When u r ready for ur next set of equipment u will know more about it & u will get to know where u can test ride equipment before buying.

With a strap in binding the foot has less movement than step in bindings. l rode a pair of Switch step in bindings for the first two seasons l began,after going to a strap in binding u can tell the difference.Last year l bought a new pair of Burton Hail boots l do not like them at all.Yesterday l went out & got a pair of Judge boots made by DC Shoe Co.They feature the Boa lace system with a pump up air bladder that locks the heel more secure,their nice & chussy feeling on the inside,can not wait to hit the slopes & try those puppies out.

its a prefrance. some people like step ins and some like strap ins.
i personally like strap ins because l think they perform better and step ins ice up and get to be a real pain

If you're going to be snowboarding in deep deep powder and getting stuck in it, I'd say to go with strap in. If you're trapped in tons and tons of snow, it is hard to move around to be able to step into bindings.

stepins are for lazy people and arent reliable

Step ins require a special boot.

l do not like step ins. l have seen peoples feet come undone from them. Also l feel a large stability difference with the stepins. l find that straps help you with control and stability. Not so much play between your feet and the board. l also like the feeling of my straps really holding my boot down and keeping everything tight.

Strap in bindings are horrible for beginners. First of all, you have to be standing in order to attach your boot to your binding. If your beginning, and can not snowboard, how do you expect to be able to keep your balance, stay still, and put your boot into the binding? Strap ins are better for beginners because you can sit down, to put them on. Strap ins are more reliable, easier, and accept a larger variety of boots.
