In the last few years, the popularity of curling in Canada has risen to such an extent, that it regularly surpasses hockey in ratings. Its two largest tournaments (The Brier & the Tournament of Hearts) each have a seven-day attendances of over 200,000 as well as several million television viewers.

Though the Scots have perfected curling into a science, it is the Canadians who've made it into an art form. No other people has embraced the game of curling as the Canadians with approximately 1.3 million curlers, a thriving cash-circuit, large TV ratings & several hundred clubs. Since the advent of the world curling championships in the early 1950's, Canadian curlers have won over half of them.

Curling is becoming a large sport in Canada that it rates higher than Hockey... l wish it would be televised all over the world more than what it is...

Curling is our life is blood. Some curlers start when they are very young, and l know that some schools have a team, but not all. They have Junior tournaments, and a lot of these kids turn out to be champions later on in the adult world. We have 'heros and heroines' - ladies teams are cheered on by all of Canada just as much as the men's. It is a wonderful team sport - there is more camaraderie amongst curlers than any other sport.

it certainly is popular here because for goodness sakes, winter can last up to 8 months here! as well, since Sandra Schmirler won the Olympic gold the first time it was an official event, women have been particularly involved. Sandra was a hero in sports and then she unfortunately lost another hard-fought battle with cancer and so we try to follow in her footsteps and bring honour to a great sport!

Growing up we always curled and had Curling Bon Spiels. It was pretty big in both my elementary and high school.

l think most people know the general rules in Canada, but some probably do not know all the details.

No, the typical Canadian does not play growing up.
Not everyone understands the rules.
Anyone can play as well as ladies, young or old.
It seems as if the fun is in the playing more than observing.
Not all schools have a team, not all schools have access to an ice surface to play and practice.

The interest is growing. l curled last year for the first time & loved it. Watching it on t.v. was boring because l never tried it. Now that l have tried it, it is exciting to watch on t.v. People should go out during an open house & try it. A lot of people enjoy it once they have tried it. They do need to bring the costs of sports down. It is a sport that u can pick the level u want to play at. l walked away with two first place teams last year. Our club allows u to play as many times a week u want for one price. More clubs need to be that way.
