In North Carolina? l am quite familiar with the area. If u r looking for vertical, try a house in Banner Elk, which is a town at smack in between of Sugar Mtn. (1200 feet of vertical, the best in NC) & Ski Beech (800 feet of vertical). They r rather exspensive, though. You could check out houses around Seven Devils, which is where Hawksnest (600 feet of vertical drop) is situated. Hawksnest is a little backcountry resort with an FIS-rated slope (Top Gun, but it is hardly ever open) & houses there should not be as expensive as the ones around Banner Elk. Or u could look for a house around Blowing Rock or Boone, around Appalachian Ski Mtn. It would probably be more expensive than around the Seven Devils area. App happens to be my favorite resort because of the friendly staff. l am never lonely at App, because l have so many friends among the ski patrol & instructors!
