Why champ Landis does not remove screws from his hip

After crushing his hip bone, he was screwed in, suffers but does not make removing the screws. Being in a similar situationl am badly interested to know why?

l am not sure why he still has the screws in. However, he is getting a full hip replacement sometime in the upcoming year, so the screws will come out and a fake hip will go in

l believe he did not have the screws removed so he could fully train for the Tour and not have to worry about time off from recovery. Also, he did not want to run the risk of reinjury. The hip will be slightly stronger with the screws in place.
