It is similar to golf in that it takes a lot of skill, but is not very physical. Both border on being a ''sport'' as opposed to a ''game''

l consider them both ''games'' but that is just my personal opinion

Oh yes. In every sense of the word. l used to be a tournament curler.

Top flight competition requires intelligence. Strategy. Skill. And modern tournament bonspiels demand a high degree of fitness especially for the front end of a rink

A curler will face two or three games per day of top competition. Every shot counts really. Every stone weighs over forty pounds & must be delivered precisely. People who do go into bonspiels must be able to endure a high degree of physical effort.

After every weekend spiel l found l had to take the next weekend off. In my youth l average three games during the week & six on the weekend. Every game of ten ends lasts two hours. Thats two full tons of rock hurled down a sheet of ice per week, per person.Thats a lot of exercise & stress.

While people do enter spiels for fun the professional curler or those competitive curlers in the quest for the Canadian Briar will play high end competition out of the club, out of their zone, out of their region, out of their province. The Canadian Briar is perhaps the most rigorous & ruthless sports competition on earth. It is so demanding that of the 200,000 Canadian curlers only four will step on the stand to accept the trophy in a three month competition of at least a full bonspiel every weekend, practice, regular house league games.

In the youth league in the School Boy competition for curling. My skip at the time played two games per week junior league, two games in adult leagues, two practices per week, & at least one bonspiel on the weekends. And every game requires the whole team to stay focussed on the game. Oh u can socialize & chat but one is always watching, studying the lay of the rocks, the ice conditions & the ever changing strategies. Its hard work.

And the modern sweeping method is better than the older straw broom method. Repetitive strain injury is not uncommon amongst sweepers. The sweeps finesse the line & speed of the shot down the ice. After any bonspiel ur arms feel like they r literally falling off.

It is a total team sport. No one sits on their ass. Yes there may be spares on the team but often there is no change during a competition. And yes I've seen plenty of people suffer sports injury.

Unlike other forms of competition like gymnastics, diving or figure skating this is a fixed result competition. There r no marks for style. The winner & the loser r clear cut. It has judges but it is not a judged sport. The team that gets the most points, wins. No ambiguity.

Its unlike any other game I've ever played. l played hockey, badminton, tennis, basketball, soccer, & baseball. If u asked me what it is most like l would surprise some people.

In many ways its like Lawn Bowling but harder work. Indeed that is its closest cousin. However of all the sports l think its most like baseball in its philosophical approach & mental preparation for a game.

The reason it appears boring because it is when one simply looks at it. One may see the skill, the strategy but its eighty percent mental action. Thats why it is very fun to play but dreadfully boring to watch unless u precisely understand the aspects of the game.

In every sense of the word its a sport because like any very good sport no matter what skill there is there is also an aspect of random or random causing influences effecting the play. Ice conditions constantly change. Air temperatures change & this effects the amount of frost on the ice. When u have eight people around its hard to control their emotions, movements, play or attitudes. In every sense it is a sport & a very good team sport.

l will Keep this as short as possible:

Curling is definitely a sport. Peple who have never played it do not think so because, well, they've never played it, & they do not know what it takes. Curling takes intelligence, ecause it is a game of strategy. No strategy=No wins. But sports r more associated with the physical aspect of games. Take it from someone who has played, & who has a champion curler as a brother: physical ability is a huge part. To be a sweeper, u have to have extreme stamina. Sweeping a rock takes so much energy, afterwards, u feel like collapsing sometimes. And the rocks r heavy, & being able to push them takes muscle, mostly in ur legs.

Curling is definitely a sport. As someone who has played it, l know that if curling was not considered a sport, things like football & baseball should not be sports either.

Sport is an activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs & often engaged in competitively. Used by itself, sports commonly refer to activities where the physical capabilities of the competitor r the sole or primary determiner of the outcome (winning or losing), but the term is also used to include activities such as mind sports & motor sports where mental acuity or equipment quality r major factors. Sports r used as entertainment for the player & the viewer. It has also been proven by experiments that daily exercise increases mental strength & power to study.

The term ''sport'' is sometimes extended to encompass all competitive activities, regardless of the level of physical activity. Both mind sports & motor sports exhibit many of the characteristics of physical sports, such as skill, sportsmanship, & at the highest levels, even professional sponsorship associated with physical sports. Air sports, billiards, bridge, chess, motorcycle racing, & powerboating r all recognized as sports by the International Olympic Committee with their world governing bodies represented in the Association of the IOC Recognised International Sports Federations
